LANFRANCHI’S MEMORIAL DISCOTHEQUE- See the docco about Sydney's creative hub
LANFRANCHI’S
MEMORIAL
DISCOTHEQUE
The last 60 days of Sydney’sfavourite artist-run space.
a documentary by Richard Baron
Lanfranchi's Memorial Discotheque
was Sydney’s favourite artist-run space, situated on the second level
of an inner city warehouse. Lanfranchi’s doubled as a residence and
unauthorised performance venue for five years, growing from unlikely
beginnings to become what director Neil Armfield described as a ‘major strand of our city’s cultural DNA’.
The decaying warehouse hosted hundreds of shows and was an accessible
starting point for Sydney’s emerging performers, artists and musicians.
That is, until property development gets in the way and Lanfranchi’s
residents are given 60 days to vacate the building.
The story of Lanfranchi’s is told through ex-residents such as Lucas
Abela; an experimental musician who plays amplified sheets of broken
glass with his mouth. A show he developed at Lanfranchi’s and has since
performed in more than 40 countries. Others soon to be displaced
include Dorkbot; a community of electrical engineering artists, the
bastard cover band Winner, experimental theatre-comedy group Cab Sav
and the Marrickville Jelly Wrestling Federation.
Despite the impending eviction, the parties roll on during the final
days of Lanfranchi’s, until the building’s owners and police intervene.
But with no replacement, and with Sydney’s vibrant underground art
communities fractured, where will the city breed its cultural DNA?
Director's Statement:
When Lanfranchi’s residents were given 60 days to pack up their
venue and vacate the building, there seemed to be nothing taking its
place. After 5 years as Sydney’s premier underground performance venue,
I thought it would be undervaluing the legacy of the space if its
memory were confined only to those who had experienced Lanfranchi’s
first hand. After all, this was an artist-run space which was
responsible for shaping much of the city’s cultural character, across
so many artistic fields.
Armed with all the naivety and passion of a first-time director, I
set out to document the last 2 months of events with the objective of
producing a short documentary. Quickly realising the story could not be
adequately told in a few minutes, the project developed into a 57
minute feature. The film was created from 50 hours of footage shot
during the last days of Lanfranchi’s, in addition to archival footage
captured by punters over the years.
Lanfranchi’s Memorial Discotheque is a guerilla-style
documentary and my directorial debut. Produced over 2 ½ years, I shot,
edited and mixed the feature with no funding or assistance from
production companies.
The documentary is testament to the creative talent of Sydney’s artists, musicians and performers.

The future is here... Bobin Kil's Car concept with removable/drivable wheels
Bobin Kil's Lightweight concept uses an electric car that can be made into 4 separate uni-cycle motor bikes. Its a great concept and so futuristic. So effectively, you can all individually meet at a party and one driver can drive everyone home?
Tool around in the car, then park it and you and a partner can each
take a wheel--literally--to zoom around on, individually. Of course it
would stink if an enterprising thief decided to drive off on one of
your wheels, but in this fantasy future we're hoping crime has been
abolished.

Tefal's Toaster and eggmaker
The easiest way to make eggs and toast now comes from Tefel- you can fry, boil, poach or scramble your eggs- wait not you- the toaster can do it all without you! So in the same time it takes you to toast your bread- the eggs are also done and you don't have to do anything- I love technology!!!

Bed to ZZZZZZZ
Bed to ZZZZZZZ: A book for parents about getting your Kids to bed
Written by Dr Jennifer Smith, and Illustrated by Eloise Hairman- this book is an interesting guide to getting your children to bed and asleep with no problems.
I work as a babysitter someones and my biggest problem is getting the kids to sleep. After illustrating this book and reading all the tricks I realised that I was doing everyhting wrong and getting so fustrated in doing so. Most times I was panicking that the parents would be home before the kids stopped jumping off the walls.

Dogs in Space- starring Michael Hutchence, Saskia Post and Nique Needles (1986)
Popcorn Taxi is proud to present this cult classic based on the real life exploits of director Richard Lowenstein and his band of drug-fuelled, party-frenzied flatmatesDogs In Space.Set in a house occupied by a collection of social misfits, the main storyline focuses on Sam (Michael Hutchence) a musician of strange caliber, his relationship with Anna (Saskia Post), their drug use and his band, the Dogs in Space. These events are surrounded by a myriad of chaotic sub-plots that include a homicidal chainsaw wielding maniac (Joe Camileri) and a TV station's offer of money in return for a piece of the Skylab satellite that has fallen to earth amidst a backdrop of intense, non-stop partying.
Featuring a soundtrack including Gang of Four, Brian Eno, Ollie Olsen, Iggy Pop and Nick Cave (Boys Next Door), this is an authentic slice of underground life in the late 70s in inner city Melbourne.
This Popcorn Taxi event is on Monday 17 August at Greater Union Bondi Junction. Stay after the film for an exclusive audience Q&A with writer/director and music video guru Richard Lowenstein and ask him anything you want!

The Omo People
Breath Taking Images of Mike Dickman
The People in this clip are probably Mursi and Suri. The Omo River empties into Lake Turkana. These images of the Beautiful people are taken in Ethipoia, Sudan and Kenya. Now this is what I call good MAKE- UP, so natural and it makes the most of the beautiful features.

He Died with a Felafel in His Hand by John Birmingham
Well the guy came out with a new book lately that I saw on Friday night at a tiny Kings Cross bookshop! Yes I went to party and meet chics but instead went into a book store! It just looked more attractive option at around 10PM rather than walking up to bunch of morons hoola-hooing "What's the craic" and drinking cheap beers in one hand and holding falling pants with the other! Even monkeys would be thinking Oh we didn't come a long way!
Some excerpts from "He Died with a Felafel in His Hand" so it would increase your interest to read the new book:
"Taylor at the time was having personal issues. He ambushed his fellow housemates with a toy gun after hiding for an hour. He told them if it was a real gun they would all be dead. John saw this as good reason to move out."
"I've lived in 49 shared households in what seems as many years. I've been ripped off, raided, threatened, burnt out, shot at, cheated on, scabbed in every one of those years. My beds are foam slabs on the floor. My cupboards are stacks of stolen milk crates. I've lived with tent-dwelling bank clerks, albino moontanners, psycho fucking drama queens, acid eaters, mushroom farmers, brothel crawlers, hard-core separatist lesbians and obscurely tiger-throated Japanese girls! I'm in a psycho-fucking nightmare from hell and I'm fucking fed up with it!"
"My parents came from the working class and the whole artist/alcoholic lifestyle didn’t really fit with where they were at, so they sent me to get a job or piss off. I didn’t believe them until I came home and all my shit was on the front lawn." -- YES I CAN RELATE TO THAT :)

Australia's Next Top Models revealed
The 13 finalists were selected from the thousands of modelling wannabes who auditioned in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Newcastle, Townsville and the Gold Coast.
"The finalists are an incredibly strong group of young girls and the race to the end will be both extremely competitive and challenging," said Priscilla Leighton Clark, founder of Priscilla's Model Management and one of Top Model's judges.
The 13 finalists are:
2008 was a big year for Top Model: the series came under fire when its winner Demelza Reveley was accused of bullying another contestant, and again when host Jodhi Meares refused to partipate in the live season finale and later quit.
The series returns to FOX8 in April with new host Sarah Murdoch.

Bondi Junction Organic Food Markets
The Bondi Markets have been running since 1991, organised by two local Rotary Clubs who donate their profits to local and international causes.
Tucked away at the end of Oxford Street in a large pedestrian shopping mall, the markets stock a variety of goods, from collectibles, retail clothing, jewellery, sunglasses and furniture, to plants and homemade arts and craftwork.
The Bondi Junction markets are held from Thursday to Sunday (10am04pm) in the Oxford Street Mall.
Friendly, family atmosphere with buskers performing in the street, a good children's playground, and lots of cafes, shops and restaurants nearby.
