Jonathan Glazer

In terms of directing TVC's and Music videos Jonathan Glazer is a genius. His resume is pretty impressive and includes campaigns like Guiness, Stella Artois, Levi Strauss, Sony Bravia and Motorola. Since the mid 90's he directed a number of music videos and in 97 Glazer was named MTV music director of the year. Some the artists he has directed include Radiohead, Jamiroquai, Massive Attack, Blur, Richard Ashcroft and Unkle.

If you want to check out more there is a brilliant DVD series called "Directors label" that features some of the best directors around and their work, some of the other big names on the series are Mark Romanek, Anton Corbijin, Stephane Sednaoui and Spike Jones.

Bondi Locals

One of my favourite things about Bondi is the colourful people that make up the suburb.

Sydney, and especially the Eastern Suburbs has long been a place where people don't say hello or acknowledge each other as they go about their business. You can easily just walk past someone in the street and not realise who they are and what their talents are.

Here Eloise interviews Jim, one of Bondi's characters and learns a little something about his ability to play Blues on the harmonica. Next time you see him, make sure you say hello.

RIP Definitely not a rip-off!

Last night at Popcorn Taxi we watched RIP: A remix manifesto.

It's Brett Gaylor's creation, an open source documentary about copyright and remix culture.

It's about our technological generation, having the world and using it. Allowing freedom in society by mashing up the media landscape, breaking the boundaries which the record companies, and big corporations and distributors want to control and creating new things from the masters.

RIP follows GIRL TALK, a mash-up musician who is topping the charts with his sample-based songs. Is it Piracy or creating new songs from recycling bits of everything?

RIP also looks at Creative Commons Founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil's Minister of Culture Giberto Giland pop culture critic Cory Doctorow. It shows ripping off music through the ages, from The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin copying directly from the Blues- to the Stones eventually suing the Verve. It demonstrates how Walt Disney ripped off the classic movies at the time- but now as a huge Corporation it wont even allow an image of Mickey Mouse to be painted on a nursery school wall- the hold of power and bullying.

Its such a informative and powerful documentary- Brett Gaylor is the Robin Hood of creative licencing- giving people back the freedom to create. He has even done this with his own film and is wanting us to copy his film- recreate the scenes and if it's good he'll re-edit his film and put it into the next screening. You can do this by going to Open Source Cinema and download the film. http://www.opensourcecinema.org

Open Source Cinema is a social network which allows you to create your own videos online, remix media that you have on your computer, as well as remix other people's media from places like YouTube and Flickr.

It was such an inspiring Documentary- I highly recommend you to see it- not to be naive of your rights to download and not feel guilty. Just recreate!

We should be ashamed!

It's 2009 and there is still such blatant racism in Australia. It is disgusting that an innocent 12 year old girl was raped in daytime at a local park near the river bank in Brewarrina in Western NSW, but what is more shocking is that although the rapist was arrested an hour later, the Aboriginal girl was not counselled nor was there any medical help. The 12 year old girl had to wait 10 days for the Police and the Department of Community Services to come and interview her. What's worse is that the case could be jeopardised because of the length of time it took to investigate. The injustice- and the tardiness is despicable.I have heard of such cases before where the Police have refused to take cases of abuse from Aboriginal children as young as 4 who have been bashed from racist white kids in places such as Inverell NSW. A family friend of mine had to go to 4 police stations before any report was taken. This should not be accepted in our society. It is barbaric behaviour, and disgraceful. http://www.smh.com.au/national/girl-waited-10-days-for-rape-investigator...

Kidman vs Tautou - Coco Chanel 5 delivers again?

5 years ago the band (Baz Luhrmann and Nicole Kidman) got back together for another hit. As Kidman became the new face of Chanel in 2004, it was only natural that ol buddy Luhrmann direct her in a epic, lavish love story. Last week the new chanel 5 TVC launched, staring Audrey Tautou and I put it to you.....which ad do you prefer? and for what reasons?

My vote is the latest with Tautou. Maybe it is because I am an Aussie, and I still remember Kidman in BMX bandits riding with that sweaty carrot top on her pushy, maybe it is because of the beautiful cinematography throughout the famous orient express train, maybe it is beautiful colour grade in post, or maybe it is because Amelie (staring Audrey Tautou) is up there on my top 20 movie list. Anyways I open this to you, which one gets your vote??

Wellington st tennis courts

I admit I dont play tennis that often, but for some unknown reason I rate myself higher than what I should. My older brother Nick has always handed my arse to me on the tennis court, but we are due for another game soon and this time it is on you Nicholas.

I have been guilty of hitting the odd ball out of bounds and not bothering to chase after it......there lies the beauty of the game of squash, in an enclosed space. Its much harder to lose balls but then again I wouldn't have been able to take a photograph like this at a squash court...

Titled: MISSING SLAZENGER BALL

Is this it or is this just it?????

A week full of fashion a lifetime full of clothes... is this what every girl dreams of or is this a past time recreation a little over rated, with promises of glitz and glamour!!! A passion is a will but a fantasy is a phase, that one grows out of; and in todays society u will not only push through one person to reach your desire but a crowd full of wankers that want to stand in your way....

Keith Loutit

Keith Loutit is a sydney based photographer who late last year created a bit of a stir and cult following nationally and internationally with a series he did combining timelapse photography with a tilt shift lense.

Timelapse photography is where you put your camera on a tripod and set it so that is to take pictures automatically over a long period of time, i.e the shutter will close every 15 seconds over the course of 2 hours etc.

Tilt shift lenses can produce a very shallow region of sharpness, and the effect is quite different from a normal camera lense. They can be used to make a large scene appear much smaller, as the shallow depth of field is similar to that achieved by a macro lense on minature subjects.

Combining these two elements of photography with a stunning city like Sydney was a sure recipe for success.

If you like this video, he has a few more on youtube.

He Died with a Felafel in His Hand by John Birmingham

Well the guy came out with a new book lately that I saw on Friday night at a tiny Kings Cross bookshop! Yes I went to party and meet chics but instead went into a book store! It just looked more attractive option at around 10PM rather than walking up to bunch of morons hoola-hooing "What's the craic" and drinking cheap beers in one hand and holding falling pants with the other! Even monkeys would be thinking Oh we didn't come a long way!

Some excerpts from "He Died with a Felafel in His Hand" so it would increase your interest to read the new book:

"Taylor at the time was having personal issues. He ambushed his fellow housemates with a toy gun after hiding for an hour. He told them if it was a real gun they would all be dead. John saw this as good reason to move out."

"I've lived in 49 shared households in what seems as many years. I've been ripped off, raided, threatened, burnt out, shot at, cheated on, scabbed in every one of those years. My beds are foam slabs on the floor. My cupboards are stacks of stolen milk crates. I've lived with tent-dwelling bank clerks, albino moontanners, psycho fucking drama queens, acid eaters, mushroom farmers, brothel crawlers, hard-core separatist lesbians and obscurely tiger-throated Japanese girls! I'm in a psycho-fucking nightmare from hell and I'm fucking fed up with it!"

"My parents came from the working class and the whole artist/alcoholic lifestyle didn’t really fit with where they were at, so they sent me to get a job or piss off. I didn’t believe them until I came home and all my shit was on the front lawn." -- YES I CAN RELATE TO THAT :)

2008 was a big year for Top Model: the series came under fire when its winner Demelza Reveley was accused of bullying another contestant, and again when host Jodhi Meares refused to partipate in the live season finale and later quit.

The series returns to FOX8 in April with new host Sarah Murdoch.
